Seagate have recently announced that they have managed to break the industry’s areal density barrier by unveiling hard drive platters with a density of 625 Gigabits per square inch. This in turn enabled them to develop a series of 3.5-inch hard drives - lead by their GoFlex Desk range of external hard drives with capacities of up to 3TB - featuring 1TB of storage space per disk platter
“Organizations of all sizes and consumers worldwide are amassing digital content at light speed, generating immense demand for storage of digital content of every imaginable kind. We remain keenly focused on delivering the storage capacity, speed and manageability our customers need to thrive in an increasingly digital world,” - Rocky Pimentel, Executive Vice President, Worldwide Sales and Marketing, Seagate.
Additionally, the new platters are also on their way to 3.5-inch Barracuda desktop hard drives which are expected to be available in the market by mid-2011 in 3TB, 2TB, 1.5TB and 1TB capacities. However, no pricing details for these new hard drivers are available for the time being. For further information, head on to www.seagate.com.
